The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition,
held annually at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the largest
synthetic biology competition in the world. Each year, student teams from
hundreds of global universities come together to compete on the design
and analysis of selected topics. Sean, a Biology major, was a member
of the HKUST iGEM team in 2012. The experience triggered his interest
in biological sciences and put him in pursuit of bio-engineering research
opportunities. Sean led his team to win a gold medal in the iGEM Asia
jamboree and proceed to the world final. He also led a presentation on
biotechnology and cancer treatment for the Hong Kong Cancer Fund,
talking about his team’s work on genetic circuits for engineering
Bacillus
subtilis
to adhere to colorectal cancer cells.
After iGEM, Sean participated in the HKUST Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program (UROP). The HKUST established the UROP ten
years ago to address the limited research opportunities available for

Sean Carim graduated from the Hong Kong University of
Science and Technology Division of Life Science in 2015.
Over the four years of his university life, he was involved
in three HKUST undergraduate research programs: the
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP);
the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)
competition; and the HKUST International Research
Opportunities Program (IROP).
