School of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 153 Development of MEMS Mirrors for Low-cost Lidar Used for Next-generation Self-driving Cars Supervisor: LEE, Yi-Kuen / MAE Student: KWON, Chanhyeok / MECH Course: UROP1000, Summer LiDAR, which stands for light detection and ranging, a distance measurement method that uses a modulated laser. The focus of this report is highly centered on the literature review and background information about LiDAR. The manufacturing process of Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is studied to understand how it can further contribute to lowering the price of LiDAR for next-generation vehicles. A literature review was then performed and three research papers will be highlighted in this report. Using the required specifications and key determinants characterized from the study of research papers, the key parameters of LiDAR for use in each industry will be discussed. Upon completion of the above-mentioned procedures, one can successfully obtain an idea of how a LiDAR system can be built. Ambular: An Emergency Response Drone Supervisor: LI, Larry / MAE Student: AYDOGMUS, Emre Can / AE LAI, Shing Kai / AE Course: UROP2100, Fall UROP1100, Fall Ambular, an aviation project initiated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), aims to develop electric Vertical Take-off and Landing’s (eVTOL) technology for improving people’s quality of life. Initial testing of the current Ambular design shows several aerodynamic issues, the biggest issue being the negative lift generated by the fuselage and arms. Thus, the current stage of the project focuses on redesigning the fuselage and optimizing lifting surfaces. Firstly, preliminary research on the different fuselage and airfoil designs were conducted. The information was then used to guide the development of new Ambular components. This report studies the aerodynamic efficiencies of a potential fuselage design of the Ambular drone by analysing experimental data obtained from conducting Wind Tunnel tests.
